A bit of history: Tennis as of today was invented in the early 1870’s in Great Britain and it was first known as ”Lawn Tennis”. This ”invention” may have been inspired by the ancient game of ”Real Tennis” from the 12th century where french monks used to play a similar game but used their hands instead of a racquet. The invention of the modern game of tennis is credited to Major Walter Clopton Wingfield who designed a game he called ”Sphairistike” which is ancient greek meaning ”skill at playing a ball”. The popularity of the game spread fast in Great Britains middle- & upper-class and after the first championship at Wimbledon in 1877 it really took off and is now considered one of the biggest sports in the world.
